Teens Tackling HIV/AIDS – The Future’s Blueprint

SPRINGFIELD – This Saturday, August 7, 2010, the Brothers and Sisters United Against HIV/AIDS (BASUAH) Ambassadors will host their first teen summit, The Future’s Blueprint, to educate youth in Illinois about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The summit will include workshops, a talent show and speakers talking to youth about risky behaviors that can lead to becoming infected with HIV, how to avoid becoming infected and ways youth can educate their friends and family to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. The summit is a chance for teens to talk with and learn from other teens about HIV and what issues they face in today’s world.

BASUAH was created to address the alarming trend and disproportionate number of HIV/AIDS infections among the African-American community in Illinois. BASUAH Ambassadors are trained educators who deliver information to their peers. Ambassadors complete an online Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) training course, promote and reinforce safe behavior by providing health education information to persons who are at high risk for HIV infection, distribute risk reduction information and materials throughout the community, and provide information on available testing and counseling centers.
